Family Focus Eyecare Sets the Record Straight on Astigmatism

You have probably heard the word “astigmatism” once or twice, whether in commercials, among friends, or during your eye examination. Astigmatism is often misconstrued as an eye disease.

So what is it?

Simply put, astigmatism is a refractive error that occurs when your cornea is stretched into an irregular shape, distorting light as it enters your eyes and causes images to appear blurry.

Astigmatism can be heredity; however, it can also be triggered by trauma or keratoconus.

Most forms of astigmatism can be easily treated with glasses or contact lenses. Depending on the person’s prescription, toric contact lenses may be prescribed for patients with astigmatism. In order to achieve high quality and stable vision, a toric contact lens must be stable in the correct position on the eye. The lens design or power can be adjusted to achieve this stable positioning. Toric contact lenses are available in both daily and monthly lenses.
